The History of Deccan Odyssey

The success of India’s first luxury train, The Deccan Odyssey, opened doors to a new era of deluxe rail travel in the southwestern part of the country. It all started with the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), which envisioned a luxury train tour through Maharashtra. In 2001, MTDC and the Indian Railway Ministry signed an agreement to make this dream a reality.

By 2002, the Railway Board gave the green light to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) to begin work on the train. Designing a luxury train wasn’t easy and took about five months to finalize. A few more months of hard work followed, and by the end of 2003, the beautiful blue Deccan Odyssey was ready to roll. Inspired by famous trains like the Blue Train of South Africa and the Orient Express of Europe, the Deccan Odyssey was equipped with modern comforts, promising travelers a luxurious experience through Maharashtra.

The grand launch of the Deccan Odyssey took place on January 16, 2004, from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. Partnering with the Taj Group of Hotels, the train offered guests a 5-star experience onboard, ensuring unmatched hospitality and comfort throughout the journey.

Each of its passenger cars includes four coupes, while the exclusive Presidential Suite cars feature two coupes per coach. For added convenience, there are staff and spare cars, as well as a spa car for relaxation. The train is powered by generator cars that also have space for luggage.
